“It will be much better use of that property, much better than what it was used for the past 20 years,” said Arthur Schwartz, who lives nearby. The North Park Inn for years was the subject of neighborhood complaints about drugs and prostitution. “There was more action than you can see on the Internet,” Schwartz said. In the year before the renovations, police received 108 calls about activity on the block where the hotel was located, according to city officials.

The prosecutor told the jury the defendant was “a rogue cop” who thought he was above the law. Sadler planned to search the prostitute and sexually assault her “because he had gotten away with it before,” Dort said.
Attridge said the prosecution was relying on “unreliable” drug addicts, felons and prostitutes to convict a veteran deputy sheriff for something that “did not occur.”
The attorney said Sadler admitted to making very poor choices but did not sexually assault the prostitute, who was on probation at the time.
Attridge said the prostitute became irritated when Sadler showed his badge and ordered her out of the car in the Mission Valley parking lot.

A sheriff’s detective accused of groping a prostitute was convicted yesterday of felony assault and battery by an officer and misdemeanor counts of assault and false imprisonment.
The jury deliberated less than two days before finding Thomas John Sadler guilty. The five-woman, seven-man panel acquitted him of sexual battery and felony false imprisonment charges.

A San Diego County Sheriff’s detective is in protective custody after jurors convicted him Monday of felony assault and battery but acquitted him on four other felony charges.
Thomas John Sadler, 49, picked up a prostitute in his unmarked car on El Cajon Boulevard and drove her to a Mission Valley parking lot in February 2008.
Three women testified against Sadler in the trial including one who said he fondled her against her will and told her “B**ch I can do anything I f**king want.” The victim said Sadler told her to take her clothes off so he could search her for narcotics. But the victim said she told Sadler a female officer needed to be present. The woman then said Sadler began fondling her, so she jumped out of the vehicle to take a picture of his license plate with her cell phone.

SAN DIEGO—A jury has convicted a San Diego sheriff’s detective of assaulting a prostitute but acquitted him of sexual assaulting her.
Thomas Sadler was convicted of felony assault and battery by a peace officer, misdemeanor assault and false imprisonment.
Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Dort said during the trial that Sadler had planned to sexually assault the prostitute during a drug search on Feb. 6, 2008.
Sadler’s attorney Mary Ellen Attridge, however, said the prostitute got into the 49-year-old Sadler’s car on her own, but the detective then changed his mind about having sex with her.
Sadler, a 20-year sheriff’s deputy, faces up to three years in prison when he is sentenced in April.
