San Diego Adult Entertainment: Supreme Court Camera Ruling Continues History of Anti-Gay Discrimination

January 25, 2010 at 9:24 am | In San Diego adult entertainment | No Comments

The plaintiffs’ attorneys are trying to show that the political campaigns ProtectMarriage.com used through commercials emphasizing the urgent need to “protect children” from being taught about gay sex – the inevitable “consequence” of learning about same sex marriage in kindergarten – are part of an on-going cultural norm of antigay discrimination.
On Wednesday, the stereotype of gays as predators was brought into sharp relief through a video shown in court of Tam’s Dec. 1, 2009 deposition.
Question: “And it is your understanding that part of the gay agenda is legalizing underage sex?” Answer: “Right.” (Page 43 of deposition)
More from Tam:
“They lose no time in pushing the gay agenda — after legalizing same-sex marriage, they want to legalize prostitution. What will be next? On their agenda list is: legalize having sex with children.”

Artistic director Christopher Ashley will stage a new production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which opens in July. Set roughly in the Victorian era, the production will feature music from Mendelssohn’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” suite performed by a live, onstage orchestra.
Tony-winning actor Jefferson Mays returns in September to star in the new musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.”
The musical, which features a book by Robert L. Freedman and music by Steven Lutvak, tells the story of an orphaned young man in Edwardian England who discovers that he’s eighth in line to a royal title. Darko Tresnjak will direct.
Nottage’s “Ruined” will begin its run in November. The drama, which has been produced in Chicago and off-Broadway, tells the story of a group of people who frequent a canteen-brothel in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo.

San Diego Adult Entertainment: Dueling portraits of Prop. 8 backers at trial

January 25, 2010 at 1:00 am | In San Diego adult entertainment | No Comments

Plaintiffs’ lawyer Theodore Olson told Walker that the 1961 marriage of Obama’s African father and white mother would have been illegal in Virginia, where the 1967 case arose.
Two perspectives
While Prop. 8’s sponsors strive for a benign image of their supporters as parents and family members motivated by their faith and concern for their children, their opponents are trying to paint a more sinister picture of fearmongers appealing to prejudice.
Their prime example has been William Tam, a San Francisco chemical engineer who was one of five official proponents of the ballot measure.
Tam, who heads the Traditional Family Coalition, sent a letter to churchgoing supporters in the Asian American community during the campaign warning that “other states would fall into Satan’s hands” if Prop. 8 lost.
San Francisco’s government, “under the rule of homosexuals,” would legalize sex with children and prostitution, and “more children would become homosexual,” Tam wrote.

DEVIL MADE HIM DO IT
Another Ostler gem: “If a baseball player is a devil-worshiper, when he crosses home plate after a home run does he point to the ground?”
CENTER OF ATTENTION
Jets snapper Nick Mangold to Newsday on his gesticulating when Mark Sanchez pulls under center: “That’s the one time the TV cameras are on me. So I try to do a lot of pointing and shouting just to show my awareness of what’s going on.”
FOOTBALL RECRUITING TALE
From Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “Did you see where three football recruits during a visit to Mississippi State last week apparently were taken to a strip club by current MSU players? So now we know what Tiger Woods is doing in Mississippi. He’s the new recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs.”

San Diego Adult Entertainment: Same-Sex Marriage in California and Prop 8: A Brief History

January 24, 2010 at 8:13 am | In San Diego adult entertainment | No Comments

Olsen presents an animus argument, asserting that animosity toward gays and lesbians drove anti-same-sex-marriage advocates to pursue Prop 8. The argument has precedent: In Romer v. Evans, a 1995 Supreme Court case, the Court ruled that a Colorado law, which prevented gays from legal protections, was based on animosity toward gays and therefore unconstitutional.
To prove animus, Olsen presents a letter written by Hak-Shing William Tam of the Traditional Family Coalition, a Prop 8 organizer. In the letter, Tam equated same-sex marriage with prostitution and “sex with children,” and asserted that legalizing same-sex marriage would result in California falling “into Satan’s hands.” Earlier in the month, Tam, a defender in the case, had asked Judge Walker to remove him from the case, fearing publicity that could endanger him and his family. Walker has yet to rule on the request.

San Diego Adult Entertainment: La Jolla’s 2010-11 lineup features some local gems

January 24, 2010 at 8:13 am | In San Diego adult entertainment | No Comments

The central role (the Underground Man) in this adaptation of the complex, existentialist Dostoevsky piece will be played by Bill Camp, “really an amazing actor who I’ve been trying to get here since I got here,” says Ashley, who took over the Playhouse position in late 2007.
The staging will include live music and video. The Playhouse is partnering on the project with Yale Rep, where Woodruff and Camp put up an initial production a year and a half ago.
• “Ruined,” November/December, Weiss Theatre. Lynn Nottage’s searing play is set in a makeshift bar and brothel in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country torn apart by civil war. The women there reveal stories of unspeakable abuse, but their courage and humor (and Nottage’s smartly crafted story) bring to the piece a surprising sense of uplift.

San Diego Strip Clubs: Did A Night Out Cost the Chargers?

January 24, 2010 at 1:12 am | In San Diego strip clubs | No Comments

Some of the San Diego Chargers went on last Friday night. They were out until early Saturday morning at a strip club. Have you heard about this? Anyone? Well, apparently, that’s the scuttlebutt around San Diego this week. Fans are quite perturbed by the news that some members of the Chargers went out on the Friday before a Sunday afternoon football game.
Grown people think that this might be why the Chargers choked against the Jets on Sunday. Adults.
Right. Listen, I’ve been known to have a drink or two myself. I’m sure I’ve mentioned that before. I also like to play basketball. I play three days a week at noon. Sometimes, I have some drinks the night before I play. I’ve got to be up really late and drink a lot to have it affect my play. And that’s if its the night before. Two nights before? Forget about it. I don’t even remember a hangover the day after I’m hungover.

San Diego Strip Clubs: Gibberman: Rex’s Jets

January 22, 2010 at 10:12 pm | In San Diego strip clubs | No Comments

Ryan opened up a big can of worms. Do not let us down. I was at Qualcomm for the Jets upset of the San Diego Chargers. At this point nothing less than a Super Bowl victory is an acceptable outcome.
I had an argument with a friend (for the sake of the story let’s name my friend Horace) through text about this issue. He sent me a text congratulating me for getting to see my team advance to the AFC Championship game.
I responded that I do not want to be congratulated until they win another two games.
The conversation that followed went like this:
Horace: Bull. Getting to the conf championship is worth of congrats. The Jets are the only team left that if they don’t win there won’t be a major disappointment.
Gibberman: Haha from an outsider’s perspective that does make sense. For me it would be like going to the strip club and getting a lap dance – just a tease.

San Diego Strip Clubs: Chargers’ night out not cause of off day

January 22, 2010 at 1:12 pm | In San Diego strip clubs | No Comments

SAN DIEGO – This has gotten out of hand, and so I am writing about it.
I can hardly believe this has become the issue it has.
There may well be some leadership and accountability voids on the Chargers. But those voids have to do with facing up to a few guys playing dumb and a few playing soft.
That void may well also have to do with occasional off-the-field misconduct or irresponsibility.
But this? This is a nonstory that has gotten feet because of the Internet, talk radio and fans who are angry about an inexplicable loss.
Monday morning, with the Chargers’ 17-14 loss to the New York Jets barely 12 hours old, I heard players had been out Friday night at a strip club until way late — as in, Saturday morning late.
