San Diego Adult Entertainment: Thornton’s HIV statistics

Rae Lewis-Thornton, an award-winning HIV/AIDS activist who was diagnosed with HIV in 1987, gave a talk on Feb. 11 in SCE. The woman was slightly hunched with some swelling from her medicine. But any evidence that this woman was infected with a fatal disease quickly faded away when she spoke with a fervor that was all to personal. The event was attended by about thirty people, half of whom were journalists. Thornton made the point that “AIDS is not a sexy topic anymore”, and the size of the audience was proof of her point, yet Thornton’s statistics were completely alarming. A black monogamous female is more likely to contract HIV than a white prostitute. 42 percent of new HIV cases are attributed to African Americans, yet African Americans comprise 13 percent of the U.S. population.
